The Birth of Starlink was in November 2020. It was offered to the general public and people all around the world have been using it for residential, business, on boats, plans, trains, and now backpacking and RV’ing where ever they go. When it first came out it was slower and very intermittent. As more satellites have been deployed and with constant hardware and software upgrades Starlink has become much more reliable. We at the Personal Power Project help people set their systems up and solve problems when and if it’s needed. We can do the majority of this remotely.
Below is a list of issues we have found that help stabilize and help make the use more dependable to reduce the intermittent down time.
1 – Starlink App – Cell Phone Update – if you do not have the latest Starlink App on your phone you will not have all the features needed to make it work properly, like showing you the switch to turn off your Starlink router and use your connected Wi-Fi mesh router instead. This is the first place to start.
2. – Wi-Fi mesh router – update you cell phone app for this as well. There are lots of great Wi-Fi routers and not that Google is even close to the best but if you have that or any other update your App for Google Home or for any other Wi-Fi router.
3. – Choose to use one router not both – in the past default setup had everyone using both the Starlink router and your Wi-Fi mesh router at the same time. This was a major problem and caused your internet connection to be very intermittent requiring you power down both routers sometimes multiples times per day. You really needed to choose using one router or the other. Starlink did not have much security on their router and everyone had to use it at the Admin level with little to no security settings so it was better to use your Wi-Fi mesh router.
4. – Starlink new Router with multiple ethernet ports – this newer router has more hardware and software updates and features. It’s designed to be used with the new Starlink Satellite Dish although it can be used the the older Starlink Satellite Dishes enhancing their usage.
