China $5k EV – Fake News!
How do you know when you have seen Fake News? If you make the Fake News!
I made this Fake News with the hopes of it finding its way back to China BYD and NIO: The Top China Swappable EV Battery Company.
Between those two companies they will solve all the battery problems we have worldwide without designing any new batteries, which they will anyway, and without going bankrupt in the process. Imagine buying an EV for $5,000 with no batteries! Why would anyone do that? When I first heard about swapping batteries for extending the driving range of EV’s while eliminating the charge time, I thought, swap my new good EV batteries for used rental batteries. I don’t trust anyone would ever give me my original batteries back. What if you purchased an EV with no batteries. The EV dealers could give you a few options on swappable batteries. Let’s say your EV had the space for a six pack of swappable batteries and each battery could go 100 miles on a single charge. Your options could be to purchase just one new battery for $5,000 or a used rental battery for $1,000 and that battery might only go 90 miles. How would that change the world of EV’s and make things better?
Why buy an EV with no batteries? Because you live in a Battery Swappable World?
- EV Purchase Price – Very Low at $5,000 – because it has no batteries
- EV High Long-Term Value – No EV batteries no EV depreciation.
- EV Resale is very high – No batteries no problems
- EV Battery Replacement Cost – None – you have no batteries, you just rent the amount you need short or long drive
- EV Driving Range – it never decreases – no batteries to worry about
- EV Used Prices Are High – if the EV is in good shape and has no batteries
- EV Battery Swapping – Worry Free – you have never owned an EV battery and never will
- EV are Light – 90% of the time for in town use – rent more batteries for long trips
- EV Light Tire Wear – 90% of the time in town use with only one battery
- EV Low Road Wear – 90% of the time in town use with only one battery
- EV Simple Charging – when you only have one battery most of the time you charge it at home and don’t swap it
- EV Long Distance Charging – when fast charging costs less do that and return your swappable batteries after your long trip
Yes, EV ownership costs are staggering and why? Because we are not living in a Battery Swapping World!
I was wondering what Google Gemini would have to say about this, so I asked and below is the answer.
Analyzing Your Hypothetical Scenario: A Deep Dive into EV Battery Swapping
Disclaimer: While the concept of battery swapping is a real and explored technology, the specific scenario you’ve outlined – a $5,000 EV with no batteries – is highly speculative and presents numerous challenges.
Understanding the Core Idea
Your proposal revolves around a world where EVs are essentially just shells, with batteries being a completely separate, swappable commodity. This model could theoretically:
- Reduce EV costs: By removing the expensive battery component from the vehicle’s purchase price.
- Improve battery utilization: By maximizing the lifespan of batteries through constant cycling.
- Accelerate charging times: By swapping depleted batteries for fully charged ones.
Potential Challenges and Considerations
However, this model faces significant hurdles:
- Infrastructure: A vast network of battery swapping stations would be required, which is a massive investment.
- Battery Standardization: Different EV models would need standardized battery packs for compatibility.
- Battery Management: Ensuring the quality and safety of swapped batteries is crucial.
- Economic Model: Determining the pricing structure for battery swaps and the overall business model would be complex.
- Consumer Trust: Building trust in a system where you don’t own the primary component of your vehicle is essential.
- Environmental Impact: The production and disposal of a large number of batteries could increase environmental concerns.
Impact on Tire and Road Wear
While your points about reduced tire and road wear due to lighter vehicles are valid, it’s essential to consider the following:
- Driving Behavior: The weight of the vehicle is just one factor affecting tire and road wear. Driving habits, tire type, road conditions, and weather also play significant roles.
- Battery Weight Variation: Even in a battery swapping model, the weight of the vehicle will fluctuate depending on the battery’s charge state.
Conclusion
Your hypothetical scenario is an interesting thought experiment that highlights the potential benefits and challenges of battery swapping. While it’s a compelling concept, its feasibility and practical implementation would require significant technological advancements and infrastructure development.
Here is my thought on what Google Gemini had to say – How to reduce the need for a significant infrastructure development. We don’t need battery swapping everywhere as we already have fast charging heading everywhere. This could be very manufacture centric. The dealerships could be the main point for battery swapping which is only needed for long trips. No battery swapping during the trip just fast charging and then return the batteries to the dealer once the trip is over. Those manufacturers that focused on the battery swapping and providing the best service will sell the most EV’s. The manufactures that don’t sell EV’s with no batteries and offer battery swapping will go out of business, as they currently are.
