CA Solar Net Billing 4-13-23 Deadline!

NEM 3.0 in California: What homeowners need to know about Net Billing

The article at the link and picture above has all the details and changes you need to know about solar for California in 2023.

CA Solar Net Billing 4-13-23 Deadline! Signup before and have up to 3 years to install.  This is the important part you need to know in order to have the time to avoid Net Billing and be grandfathered in with those that beat the deadline.

Here is one of the things they are telling you.  If you get backup batteries they are very expensive although it will make Net Billing a little better if you can afford those batteries.  Now, here is what they failed to mention.  You could get three Tesla Powerwalls installed for about $40,000 which will keep that average home powered up for a day or two.  That is very expensive and the average home might only need one battery.

Now for the good news they aren’t telling you.  You could spend that $40,000 on an inexpensive EV like a Chevy Bolt or lease one for less.  Once the bidirectional home EV chargers are available in 2023 or 2024 for about $1,500 that EV will keep the average home running for about a week.  Sound like a better idea.  Yes, it is and when the grid power is on, you can still use that EV to keep you off grid most of the time.  If the grid was down for a few weeks and it was very bad weather for solar, you could drive it to a fast charge station and take it back home for another week or two of power.  Anyway you look at solar, the sooner you invest in that and an EV the better off you will be.

Just head to the Person Power Project and we are here to beat the deadline and keep your lights and power on!

California 2023 new rules for Solar

California 2023 – new rules for Solar – per Tesla

Hello,

As we close out 2022, we’d like to share with you some good news for clean energy and invite you to join us in thanking Governor Newsom and the Public Utility Commission (CPUC) for their leadership.

As a reminder, in January, we alerted you to a proposal from the CPUC that would’ve effectively ended rooftop solar and storage as an option for customers in California. The original proposal would’ve imposed a tax on solar customers of roughly $60/month and reduced the period of time existing solar customers can stay on their current NEM tariff.

In response, Tesla customers like you sent over 24,000 messages to the CPUC and Governor’s office, joining thousands of other Californians in protesting the proposal through emails, phone calls, social media, verbal comments at CPUC meetings, protests, op-eds and other civic engagement.

Thankfully, Governor Newsom and CPUC President Alice Reynolds listened, and last week the CPUC approved a revised version of NEM 3 that creates a more reasonable approach to rooftop solar. This wise decision is intended to pair rooftop solar with battery storage, which provides increased benefits for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and grid resiliency.

Importantly, unlike the CPUC’s original proposal, the revised Decision does not penalize solar customers with a discriminatory monthly fixed charge, and it maintains the original 20-year lock-in period on the old NEM rules for customers who previously installed solar.

For solar arrays installed after April 2023, the revised Decision changes how energy sent back to the grid is valued, such that it is no longer credited at the retail rate, and instead is credited at a rate that reflects the value of energy to the grid and for reducing GHG emissions.

Thus, during spring afternoons when energy from the grid comes mostly from inexpensive, GHG-free renewables, NEM credits will be very low, in order to encourage customers to store their solar energy for later use. On summer evenings when grid energy is generated by dirty fossil plants, NEM 3 customers will be compensated at nearly $3/kWh (about 10 times the retail rate) to encourage reducing emissions by sending clean energy back to the grid.

While the new NEM Decision makes it less attractive for customers to install stand-alone solar, customers who install solar paired with storage will still be able to largely offset their own energy use without punitive fees or penalties. Plus, the addition of storage to solar arrays will move the state closer to 100% clean energy, as well as create new benefits for customers, the cleantech economy, the electric grid and the environment.

Thank you for your advocacy, and please join us in applauding the Governor and CPUC leadership for facilitating a more reasonable NEM proposal that will improve grid resilience and reduce carbon pollution.

Solar Rights Alliance – We have a suggestion!

Utility Companies – Get into the Rooftop Solar Game!
Utility companies nationwide are already contracting companies to build them very large ground based solar to feed their company client’s power.  They are already in the solar game!  So why are they fighting Rooftop Solar.  Because they are not in the rooftop solar game and have failed to understand how they can make money in the Rooftop Solar game?

An idea whose time has come!
Solar Leasing
is how Utility companies can generate income from Rooftop Solar.   The fear that utility companies have is that they will be out of business if rooftop solar takes over as everyone will want to be off grid.  The truth is utility companies will go out of business if they do not get in the rooftop solar game.  Elon Musk is a perfect example of how a utility company is born and raised without the need for the grid.  We are not saying we want or need to eliminate the grid.  In some cases we might always need the grid and preferably if it was all buried underground.  Underground is safer, looks better, stops wildfires, and is unfortunately three times the price of above ground.  Three times the price is not so bad if you need way less grid transmission lines due to rooftop solar especially using rooftop solar mini grids.   Utility companies can contract solar installations using all the existing solar companies doing the work but the utility companies pay for their share of installations and then lease out their share of rooftop solar as usual to residential and business locations.  Once the 25 year lease ends the solar might be getting close to needing a replacement and the lease can be renewed or extended.  The same goes for batteries or any other technology  that holds power as a backup.

Federal and State Governments – You need to require that utility companies provide some percentage of clean energy from specifically rooftop solar.  Once that process has begun they can increase the percentage requirements over time.  All Federal and State tax incentives should be there for utility companies, residential and business rooftop solar.  Also competitive rates from different companies to encourage higher returns for rooftop solar power returned to the grid.  This will now also benefit the utility companies as well because they are now included in the rooftop solar game!

Our suggestion?  Fill out the form and donate to any company like Solar Rights Alliance that passes your request to state agencies to mandate utility companies to get into the Rooftop Solar Game!

PG&E claims home solar is racist, wants to gut program

Full Article – I am sure if you checked PG&E most of their Investors are white, so stop the race card.  That is just another smoke screen.  The entire United States power grid is Betamax, VHS, and Blockbuster old technology whose time has past.  Decentralized Rooftop Solar for home and business puts an end to transmission lines which is 70% of everyone’s electric bill.  Of course all utility companies want to stop Rooftop Solar as it is putting them out of business.  Are we putting an end to fossil fuel?  Yes, and for a good reason, it’s killing all life on planet earth.  Have transmission lines killed people? Yes, from all the downed transmission lines that start fires.  Burying the transmission lines in the ground will cost three times a much.  Replacing transmission lines with Rooftop Solar as much as possible solves many problems.  Utility companies need to move into and expand on Rooftop Solar as a source of their income or go out of business.  Pure and simple!  Tesla is becoming a utility company with no transmission lines.  If Tesla can do it so can the current utility companies.  The government can help this transition with their usual tax incentives.

Warren Buffett – my new best buddy!  I will have to admit I had doubts when I heard Warren Buffett was investing big bucks in the Chinese BYD electric vehicles.  Why wasn’t he investing in America like into Tesla or others here at home?  When I came across this video of Topaz right here in San Luis Obispo CA it changed my mind.  Warren Buffett through BHE has enough money to spread it around the world and do us all a favor.  See why Why Warren Buffett Is Betting $30 Billion on Solar and Wind.  Go for Warren Buffett.  You Da Man!
